Jurong Bird Park

Getting there

I would recommend getting a taxi but if you want a cheaper method use the MRT by taking the East West Line to Boon Lay and then taking bus 194 from there to the park.

At the park

High Flyers Show

We reached there only at 11:00, just in time for the High Flyers Show at Pools Amphitheatre. There, many birds showed us many flying stunts like the hornbills who caught pieces of food in mid-air or the macaw who flew through really small hoops.

Section 1 (Tram Stop 1-Tram Stop 2)

Wetlands: The Wetlands enclosure was an exhibit which had scarlet ibises, spoonbills and other terrestrial birds whose natural habitat is a wetland.

Royal Ramble: This enclosure gave us the chance to see crowned pigeons and green peafowls up-close without a cage or even a glass separating us from them.

Hornbills and Toucans: The largest of its kind, this exhibit had a lot of hornbills and toucans including the African pied hornbill and the Toco toucan. Hornbill feeding is at 11:45 am. Food cannot be purchased for you to feed the bird.

Section 2 (Tram Stop 2-Tram Stop 3)

I didn’t explore anything at Section 2 but if any of you reading this by any chance go to Singapore and to Jurong Bird Park, if you can, then return here and leave a comment below about what all you saw there. Also try to give me some pictures of your experience at Section 2 and the High Flyers Show. I’ll try to write about both of them with your comments’ help. You may also report issues and things I’m missing to write about in this blog.

Section 3 (Tram Stop 3-Tram Stop 1)

Waterfall Aviary: A really large collection of parrots, starlings, peacocks and many other birds and a 30-meter-tall man-made waterfall, the tallest of its kind, make this place a must-visit.

Waterfall Aviary Starling Feeding: When I was given a cup full of live worms to feed starlings at Waterfall Aviary, I was a little scared. I did not want those little birds to sit on my hand. So this is my idea which I am giving to all of you- put the cup of worms on the handle on either side of the bridge so the starlings’ sharp claws don’t dig into your hand.

Parrot Paradise: Many colourful parrots and similar birds like macaws and cockatoos reside in this area.

Pelican Cove: No barrier between you and more than 25 big pelicans. The viewing deck at Pelican Cove allows you up-close views of pelicans at their natural habitat. Pelican feeding is at 2:00 pm.

Breeding and Research Centre: Very cute chicks reside here at the Breeding and Research Centre. Each chick’s enclosure is labelled with what type of bird it is and when it was born so you can know which enclosure it would go to when it grows up and how old it is currently. If you’re lucky you might watch some chicks being fed.
